Dealing With The Truth And Only The Truth

A woman was brought to Jesus. She was accused of committing adultery. Her accusers wanted to see how He would handle their accusation. In dealing with the truth, His actions surprised them.

Jesus straightened up and asked her, Women where are they? Has no one condemned you? John 8:10

Do I believe this incident really happened? Of course, I do. Do I believe the story is accurate? Absolutely. There was probably truth involved, but not the whole truth.

But what I doubt is the accuracy of those making the accusation. Do I believe this woman was caught in the act of adultery? I doubt it. The last time I checked, it takes two to have a fling, yet they were only accusing one.

So why did they pick her? I think she was probably a prostitute, and at one time or another she was guilty of the charges, but probably not this time.

The people who made this accusation were ready to stone her. They were willing to sacrifice her just to trap Jesus. The scripture says they kept demanding an answer.

Jesus, Dealing With The Truth

Jesus stood up and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” They were not expecting that answer. One by one, they began to walk away, because they knew they had been outsmarted by Jesus. In dealing with the truth, Jesus dealt with the whole truth.

Dealing With The Truth And Only The Truth

The reason I think she was probably a prostitute is that she did nothing to argue her case. Perhaps she knew she had been guilty of this crime at some time. I also think that because Jesus told her specifically to go and sin no more, she was likely involved in that type of lifestyle at that present time.

Whether you are involved in some sort of sinful lifestyle, or you only commit the occasional sin, go to Jesus for forgiveness.

He will forgive you and tell you the same thing he told this woman, “Go and sin no more.”

Lord, thank you for forgiving us each time we come to you, even though you know how sinful we really are.

  1. This is one of my favorite stories in the Gospels. Jesus will forgive our sins when we “go and sin no more.” And even if we slip up, He is ready to listen to our pleas for forgiveness and redemption.
    Blessings!
