Psalm 91 gives us a beautiful picture of those who live under the shadow of God’s wings. As Christians, we can rest there while we dwell in the shelter of the Most High.
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalms 91:1
This Psalm contains some great promises for those who seek the Lord for their refuge. Maybe you don’t know what it means to dwell in His shelter and rest in His shadow.
I recently went outside to work in the yard on a beautiful summer day. With the sun brightly shining, it made for a very warm day.
So, I decided to take a break by sitting on the front porch. I enjoyed the shadow created by the porch because it shaded me from the sun’s heat.

On another occasion, a rainstorm came through our neighborhood. So I decided to watch it as I stood on the front porch. This time, the porch served as my shelter.
These serve as simple illustrations of what the Psalmist said in our verse for today. A front porch can only offer shade and shelter from the elements.
Looking at the verses of this Psalm, we will see that the Lord does much more for us. All those living under the shadow of God’s wings have the following assurance.
This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. Psalm 91:2-3
The Illustration of Living Under the Shadow of His Wings
The Psalmist continued by offering his own illustration using feathers. When facing an enemy, we cannot use a feather to hide behind or fight with. But God can!
He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. Psalm 91:4
A mother bird protects her young by covering them with her outstretched wing while scaring off an intruder. God’s feathers and wings signify His protection.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:4
We Need Not Fear
Do you live under the shadow of His wings? Those who do don’t need to fear the things of the night or threats during the day.
Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Psalm 91:5-6
God’s promises continue for those living under the shadow of His wings. Verse nine tells us He made His benefits contingent on our actions. He said “if” we will, then He will.
If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter. Psalm 91:9
The Lord isn’t asking us to jump through hoops or do anything unrealistic. His benefits come when we trust Him to shelter us and to keep us safe.
- No evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.
- For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.
- They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
- You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! Psalm 91:10-13
Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Psalmist encouraged those living under the shadow of His wings. In verse 14, he began to quote God by saying, “The Lord says.”
- I will rescue those who love me.
- I will protect those who trust in my name.
- When they call on me, I will answer;
- I will be with them in trouble.
- I will rescue and honor them.
- And I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation. Psalm 91:14-16
How to Live under the Shadow of God’s Wings
Still not sure how you can live under the shadow of His wings? First, it can only happen when you accept what Jesus did for you.
He died on the cross and rose from the grave, making a way for the forgiveness of your sins. Therefore, you must ask His forgiveness and publically live your life for Him.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
As far as living under the shelter of His wings, we read about it in this chapter. “If “- you make the Lord your refuge and shelter in Him, and “When” – you call upon His name.
Eternal Shelter
Revelation talks about the people who get saved during their terrible ordeal of the Tribulation. They will die for their faith in Jesus and then stand before the throne of God.
One of the twenty-four elders asked John who those people were and where they came from. John replied, “Sir, you are the one who knows.” Then, he told the apostle;
That is why they stand in front of God’s throne and serve him day and night in his Temple. And he who sits on the throne will give them shelter. Revelation 7:15
Trust the Lord today by living under the shadow of His wings. Then, in eternity, you will live in His shelter forever.
Lord, we exalt your glorious name for your wonderful promises. You shelter us, give us rest, protect us in times of trouble, and reward us with long life.
