The basic concept for comfort in both the Old and New Testaments is encouragement. Whether by words or the presence of another to help in time of need. Synonymous words are console, help, give relief, cheer up, exhort, and fear not.
Jesus was not hesitant to stretch the disciples beyond their comfort zones. For some of their Samaritan experience they were asked to function without Him physically being with them.
He will also stretch us to situations we are not comfortable with. In our case even though Jesus isn’t physically with us. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” The Lord will be will us all the time.
