How Important Is Having A Cornerstone For Your Life?

In Bible College, I formed a singing group called The Cornerstone Singers. We had a theme song that included these lyrics. Jesus is the cornerstone. Came for sinners to atone. Though rejected by His own, He became the cornerstone. This song meant a lot to me because having the Cornerstone for your life is very important.

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” 1 Peter 2:7

Years ago as children’s evangelists I built a rather nice size building for storage. It is still standing and is very firm to this day. One of the reasons attributed to it, because of the preparation of the foundation. I’d like to take credit for its foundation, but I can’t. I did all the woodwork which included the framing, roof, and the inside walls.

Laying a cornerstone was something I knew nothing about. Now in my case, I didn’t actually have a cornerstone. The foundation begins with a footer. The blocks that started on the first corner of the footer needed set just as precisely as a cornerstone would be set.

After the footer was poured my neighbor asked me if I knew what I was doing? I didn’t! So he carefully placed the blocks to make a starting corner. He told me that I was now ready to lay the blocks for the foundation.

Having A Cornerstone For Your Life is important

The Important of The Cornerstone

I knew that I needed to have a concrete footer. It had to be solid and deeper than the freeze line in the ground. But a foundation is worthless if the building isn’t built on it. In Ephesians, Paul told us about our Christian foundation.

Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. Ephesians 2:20

That day I found out how important a cornerstone is. If it is not precisely set at the proper angle, the block or stonework could end up missing the footer  altogether. If that happens the foundation would be useless. Ephesians 2:20  also has another sentence in it.

And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. Ephesians 2:20

I’m thankful that God knows something about the cornerstone of our faith. Jesus the Cornerstone for our life is precisely set on the foundation of our faith. And because of that, Ephesians 2 continues with this.

We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Ephesians 2:21

Jesus Is The Cornerstone For Your Life

Make sure that your life firmly set on the foundation provided by our Lord? Then when the storms of this world try to knock off your firm foundation, you will be immovable. Here is what Jesus taught.

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. Matthew 7:24-25

Lord, thank you that we are a part of this magnificent building called the church with Jesus the Cornerstone keeping us firmly on its foundation.

In these times we are living in. It is important that we stay on the firm foundation that God has provided.
