Did you ever ask yourself the question, does God forgive me even if I keep sinning? Whether you’ve asked that or not, continue reading.
Psalm 78 tells us, even with everything the Lord did for the Israelites, they continually sinned against Him. Just like we are prone to do.
“But in spite of this, the people kept sinning. Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” Psalms 78:32
In this Psalm, the writer revealed how sinful the Israelites had acted since their deliverance from Egypt. They rebelled against God, refused to trust Him, and they proved their unfaithfulness toward Him.
While murmuring and complaining in the wilderness, God still met their needs.
He made streams pour from the rock, making the waters flow down like a river! Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. Psalm 78:16-17
They continued to rebel against God and also made accusations against Him.
They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved. And they even spoke against God himself, saying, “God can’t give us food in the wilderness. Psalm 78:18-19
The next verse says they didn’t believe Him or trust him to care for them. Yet He continued to meet their needs.
But he commanded the skies to open; he opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna for them to eat; and he gave them bread from heaven. They ate the food of angels! Psalm 78:23-25
God Proved His Love for His People
The Psalmist also outlined many of the ways God proved His love for them. Even though one might feel they didn’t deserve it.
Their hearts were not loyal to him. They did not keep his covenant. Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times he held back his anger and did not unleash his fury! Psalm 78:37-38
With all they experienced including the miraculous power of God, the Israelites continued to test Him. The people just couldn’t seem to remember any of the things He did for His people.
They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from their enemies. They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt. . . But they kept testing and rebelling against God Most High. They did not obey his laws. Psalm 78:42-43, 56
Think about all of their sin and unfaithfulness, rebellion and lack of trust, and their murmuring and complaining. Yet, look at the closing verse of this Psalm.
He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands. Psalm 78:72
What about When We Keep Sinning, Does God Forgive Us?
Humans use an irritating phrase over and over again. Sometimes it’s spoken other times it isn’t.
What’s the phrase? “I Want,” and it’s been used throughout the centuries. These two words when used together tend to lead us down some paths we shouldn’t be walking.
God still does miraculous things today. I’ve seen how people have benefitted from them. Then before you know it they revert to their old sinful ways. Have you ever seen that happen?
Maybe I’m stepping on some toes. Let’s take a poll. All those guilty of doing that very thing, please raise your hand. . . Can I put my hand down now? Yea, I’ve blown it too.
What gets me is, we make statements or have thoughts like these. “I shouldn’t do this, or I know this is wrong, but.”
And then we go ahead and do it anyhow. Whether we admit to it or not, sin has once again gotten a hold of us.
How about when We Continually Repeat the same Sin
When we repeat the same sin over and over again. And we continually keep sinning, will God still forgive us? Here’s what the Psalmist says.
He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12
God not only removes our sin completely away from us, let’s look at what the writer of Hebrews said.
God said, and I will forgive their wickedness. And I will never again remember their sins.” Hebrews 8:12
Our problem is, we remember our sins, He doesn’t. We pile our sins up in our minds, He sends them away.
We condemn ourselves. But in Him, there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. His forgiveness remains available to us just for asking, God will you please forgive me?
If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
Will we ever become sinless? Not in this life. But as we mature in our walk with the Lord, our desire to willfully sin will subside.
We’ll always wrestle to some degree with sin. And He will always forgive us every time we ask Him.
